In June 1993 a hose on the tanker "Betula" broke and the sulfuric acid contained in its tankers spilled into the sea, mixing with the water and fuel.
The "Betula" ran aground on the borders of Playa Azul and Calabazas, in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, in Michoacán, México where the inhabitants turned it into a tourist attraction, over concern about its environmental impact.
